As the architect of modern Osun, former Governor Rauf Aregbesola, is celebrating his 62nd birthday today, one of his most important achievements while in the saddle was his rare dogged process to liberate the state from the claws of the reactionary elements.
It is on record that the road to the liberation of Osun was rough as some people got killed, others permanently maimed while some were openly made to lose their means of livelihood.
Cases of women whose status instantly transformed to widows with some husbands becoming widowers while quite a number of other children in the state became either motherless or fatherless with a sizeable number of them becoming homeless as a result of mere ventilation of needless political anger on the opposition were rife during the protracted and tortuous journey to rescue the state.
The joy that accompanied the whole process was that the mission to bail out the state from the jigsaw of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) became a success story.
It is not uncommon to see some people castigating Aregbesola for one reason or the other while in office. But it’s pertinent and instructive to remind us that Aregbesola is a human being who did not claim to be an Angel when he was coming to administer the state.
It’s not encouraging enough for the led to dwell on what one has not done alone, forgetting what he has done. Today is an illusion without yesterday. Aregbesola had performed to the best of his ability and capability while in office.
As I am joining the sundry wellwishers of ex-Governor Aregbesola today on the occasion of his 62nd birthday anniversary, I am putting it on record that the greatest gift the Ijesa-born Osun political leader had ever given to the state was his resilience and uncommon bravery to banish the PDP from the political leadership of the state when he was the Grand Commander of the civil army of men that partook in the political suicide mission before 2007 and three and a half years after.
As one of his sector commanders who effectively manned the duty-post of *Osun Defender Newspaper*, it is on record that Aregbesola with his unbroken spirit would not fail to breathe confidence in any wary then lieutenants of his with an assurance that the victory would be for us.
If not for Aregbesola’s doggedness and exemplary leadership spirit, the progressive party would have faced permanent extinction in the state.
Despite the fact that he was tortured, harassed, bruised, framed up, arrested, arraigned, threatened with death and made overtures to with handsome pecuniary stuff to drop his agitation to reclaim his stolen mandate, Aregbesola remained resolute and unbent.
It’s not for fun that this birthday of yours falls within the Ramadan period; it’s not impossible for you to have needlessly ruffled some feathers during the course of your efforts to improve the status of the state, genuine restitution in this regard won’t be too much an antidote as a soothing balm for same.
Events have shown over the years that leaders are like prisoners who often fall victim of sycophants who engage in misinformation, outright falsehood and lies in order to attract attention of the leaders or for their personal gain.
It cannot be an understatement to state that your thinking out of office cannot be the same as while you were in the office.
As you celebrate another addition to your number of years on the planet earth today, it’s my wish that God will continue to enlarge your coast, protect your family and make permanent His numerous blessings for you.
